AMG 3O1 Grade 11 Music - Open

 

 

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

 

This course is designed as a continuation of AMG 2O1. Students will further develop and refine the techniques learned the previous year.  The course will expand on the fundamentals of guitar playing developed in the prerequisite Grade 10 guitar course.  Students will play selections from a wide range of music genres including rock, classical, jazz, metal, country, blues, pop & latin.

 

 

CREATION

 

Performing                                                                

 

Technique:

 

Advanced warm-up patterns

 

Scales:  Major scales, Minor scales, Blues scales, Pentatonic Scales

 

Studies: From various resources                

 

Learn about natural harmonics and alternate tunings

 

Learn extended left hand techniques (vibrato, hammer-ons, pull-offs, bends, gliss)

 

Advanced Strumming and Accompanying Techniques

 

Further develop Finger-picking Techniques (rest-stroke and free-stroke)

 

Further develop Plectrum Techniques (including alternate picking)

 

Lead guitar techniques

 

Barre chords from memory (All + and – with 5th and 6th string roots)

 

 

Repertoire:

 

Solos, duets, ensembles

 

Repertoire, which reinforces techniques

 

Public performances

 

 

Sight Reading:

 

Continue to improve sight reading technique

 

Clap or play rhythmic and pitched exercises containing stylistic and dynamic markings as well as band repertoire.

 

 

Composing and Arranging

 

Create multi-part compositions for the guitar and tab them with accuracy.

 

 

THEORY

 

Theory:

 

Advanced guitar care (stringing, etc.)

 

Review the fret-board and all note names

 

Review Key Signature Theory and Pop Song Forms (I,IV,V,I)

 

Note Reading in the Treble Clef

 

Advanced chord theory (Major vs. Minor, add, sus chords)

 

 

Ear Training:

 

Tuning the guitar (including harmonics)

 

Playing in tune, hearing intervals

 

 

ANALYSIS

 

Listening:

 

Listen to a variety of styles of guitar music.

 

Further examination of elements of music and history of music/composers.                                                                         

 

Self and Community:

 

Effects of physical fitness/health habits on performance skills, health benefits of music, ID own strengths/needs and improve, journal - reflection of learning, skills developed through music.

 

               

 

ATTENDANCE:

 

Since music is a hands-on skill, attendance is extremely important.  Students should arrive on time, with all required equipment and work for the entire period.

 

The A.S.C.V.I. Attendance Policy applies to all students (please see Student Handbook).

 

 

ASSESSMENT AND FINAL EVALUATION:

 

Evaluation will be through:

 

1. Playing Tests     

 

2. Theory/History/Listening Quizzes, Homework                       

 

3. Assignments     

 

4. Day-to-day work 

 

                            

 

Term = 70% (50% playing tests, 20% theory)

 

Exam and Culminating Activities = 30%     

 

 

Homework

 

Homework in music class generally consists of practicing the music, which you have been given in class that day.  Home practice is an important component in a musician's success.  Students are expected to complete all written homework on time.

 

 

Late Assignments

 

All homework/assignments will be given a due date.  Late penalties will be explained for each assignment.                      

 

Learning skills such as works independently, teamwork, organization, homework completion; work habits and initiative will be monitored and reported.

 

 

Make-Up Tests

 

On the day a student returns from an absence, they must make arrangements with the teacher to make up the test within the next 2 school days.  Missed tests will be made up during the lunch hour.   Failure to do so could result in a mark of "0" for the missed test.

 

In addition to the one progress report and two report cards, students will be provided with frequent updates of their marks.  Students are expected to also monitor their own progress.  Opportunities for extra help are available at lunch and after school.

 

                                                                              

 

HOW TO BE A SUCCESSFUL MUSIC STUDENT

 

Ø       Attend class regularly, with all equipment, ready to learn.

 

Ø       Participate fully in all class activities.

 

Ø       Stay focused and use your class time wisely.

 

Ø       When in need of assistance, ask for it.  The music teacher is here to help you.  Fellow students and peer helpers are also good resources.

 

Ø       Complete assignments on time - talk with your teacher before the assignment is due if you need an extension.

 

Ø        Practice your instrument regularly.
