OUTDOOR LEADERSHIP PROGRAM - Course Outline

 

 

This course focuses on the development of leader ship and coordination skills related to recreational activities.  Students will acquire knowledge and skills required to plan, organize, and implement recreational events.  They will also learn how to promote the value of physical fitness, personal well-being, and personal safety to others through mentoring.  The course will prepare students for college programs in recreational leisure, and fitness leadership.  This course will meet these expectations through outdoor activities and experiential learning.  Prerequisite:  Any grade 11 or 12 open course in health and physical education.

 

 

Course Fee:    A fee of $325.00 will be charged to the student as a condition of registration to cover costs of transportation, programming, equipment rental, park fees, etc. 

 

 

Requirements:

 

 

Apart from normal physical education attire, students will be responsible for   having           some basic outdoor items.  Each student will be responsible for:

 

-outdoor clothing for all seasons

 

-some outdoor equipment (mountain bike, backpack, etc.)

 

    -some basic outdoor items (watch, compass, whistle, etc.)

 

     -   warm sleeping bag & foam mattress

 

 

EVALUATION:        FINAL ASSESSMENTS:  ……………….......…...                  30%

 

                                    TERM ASSESSMENTS:   .…..…………………..                   70%                

 

 

Term assessments focus on participation in class activities and on 3 wilderness excursions.  In addition, quizzes and projects will be given throughout the semester.  The final assessments will consist of a course journal and a culminating activity.

 

The following learning skills will be reported but not evaluated:  works independently, teamwork, organization, work habits, and initiative.  Further clarification of the categories of learning and learning skills can be found at the Ministry of Education website at   www.edu.gov.on.ca . 

 

 

Attendance:   You are required to arrive on time, with the proper equipment and ready to participate on a daily basis.  A large portion of your mark hinges on your daily, active participation!

 

 

Late Assignments:    Students must make alternate arrangements with the teacher prior to the due date or a mark of zero will be awarded.  Students will similarly receive a mark of zero if they do not meet the alternate due date. 

 

 

Wilderness Excursions:        This course includes three outdoor experiences.  Attendance is critical, so be sure to plan ahead.  Some planning and preparation for these excursions will be done in class. 

 

 

Permission forms and medical form must be completed before taking an active role in this course.
